DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY

Mr. S. Falvey.  Dr. L. Kowalewski

Skills/topics covered during Year 7 include: Design and Make: research and planning; communicate ideas through words and labelled sketches; work with a variety of materials and components; select and work with a range of tools and equipment; evaluate designs as they develop; keep a record.

This course will extend practical skills and improve the design and technological capabilities developed at Key Stage 2. Students will be enabled to identify needs, design solutions to meet these needs, make their design, and evaluate the success of their work. Discussion, not just practical expertise, forms a very important part of learning in this subject, in helping to identify what is needed to fulfil the design brief. Students will use a variety of skills to design and make the items related to this brief.

Beginning with a set of induction lessons, students are taught to work with a wide range of media and resources: wood, plastics, fabric, metal, card, etc. They will develop skills appropriate to the construction of their ideas, including: research, presenting information, the safe and appropriate use of equipment and machines, an understanding of materials, the need for constraints and working to them, measurement and marking out, cutting and shaping of materials, IT skills. Students are assessed upon the manner in which they have worked, together with the quality of the items they have produced, with assessment directly related to the National Curriculum Attainment Targets. Homework is a vital part of this course and includes a variety of tasks, such as drawing, research, design, and written work. It is intended to be an extension of work carried out in lessons, a preparation for future lessons, and an opportunity to develop independent study skills.
