Charlton Nursery Early Years Foundation Stage provides opportunities for children to play, learn and succeed in an atmosphere of care and being valued.

Activities are carefully planned to help the children develop their full potential at their own pace, across the 7 areas of Learning and Development and through the characteristics of effective learning.

THE PRIME AREAS

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

At Charlton Nursery children are provided with experiences and support which enables them to develop a positive sense of themselves and others. They have the confidence to try new activities, play co-operatively and form relationships with adults and other children. Our experienced practitioners play a vital role in this crucial element of children's growth by nurturing and ensuring positive dispositions to aid learning.

Communication and Language Development

Children's learning and competence in understanding, speaking and listening are supported and extended. Rhymes and action songs add to the enjoyment of learning.

Physical Development

Children have an abundance of opportunities to be active and interactive, and to improve skills of coordination, control, manipulation and movement. This includes pencil control and mark-making. Our extensive grounds provide fantastic opportunities for games and energetic play.

THE SPECIFIC AREAS

Literacy

The Nursery is rich in print; it is a place where children can learn about words and see text. The curriculum also includes the enjoyment of stories through a range of visual clues and story props. Children experiment with writing, signs and symbols.

Mathematics

We provide a wide range of mathematical experiences to enable children to develop an understanding of number, shape, space and pattern, as well as an opportunity to engage in logical thinking.

Understanding of the World

Activities are carefully chosen to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding that will help children to make sense of the world. Children are encouraged to explore programmable toys. The learning is supported through offering opportunities to encounter creatures, plants and objects in their natural environments.

Expressive Arts and Design

Children's creativity is extended by providing activities to support their curiosity, exploration and play. Opportunities are created to explore and share thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of art, music, dance, imaginative and role-play activities.
