College Open Evening

Open Eve (104)

A big thank-you to all the staff and students at the College who made the Open Evening on Monday such a success. The energy and enthusiasm of the students especially, is a real measure of the quality of the College community. The comments from visitors were very positive and many stayed beyond the formal presentation to enjoy the broad variety of activities on display around the site. Pictured above from left to right are Brother Francis the Chair of Trustees, Benjamin Vandervelde- Deputy Head student, Mr Lickley – Headteacher and Shauna Soloman – Head student.

Year 7 Team Building

Team Build (8)

Year 7 proved very adept at building newspaper towers on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Thom brought both classes together for an opportunity to ‘build’ relationships and communication skills. The event proved to be very successful and was followed with the presentation of certificates for the teams. A big thank-you to Mrs Thom and well done to all our Year 7.

Pope Benedict XVl in Hyde Park

St. Mary’s College was represented in Hyde Park on the Saturday that the Holy Father lead a celebration of prayer and praise Chris Mc.Gill (Year 10) was one of the pupils and he writes:

“I had a wonderful day visiting Pope Benedict in Hyde Park. I accompanied Brother James and his friends. There was a short walk through security when we arrived, then we had to find our allotted position. It gave us a fantastic view.  Among the vast crowds I came across Nina Nannar (from ITV News) and Carol Vorderman; but neither compared with the Pope. When he arrived a great cheer went up and the experience that followed was magical. A ‘once in a lifetime’ experience. To sustain us on the way home we managed to find a McDonald’s open. It was an absolutely fantastic day and our thanks to Brother James”

Civic Awards Ceremony with the Mayor of Southampton

A very proud moment for last year’s Year 6 students and their families as they received their Civic Award from the Mayor of Southampton in the Council Chamber.

Civic Awards

The event took place last Saturday morning and was the culmination of twelve months commitment to serving others and undertaking new hobbies. Their holiday in Wales provided the adventure aspect of the award. They all admitted that it was tough but worth it in the end.

AGM and Quiz Night

Quiz and AGM (30)

The Annual General Meeting was run in parallel with the Charlton and College Quiz nights last Friday evening and proved to be very successful. The attendance by former and existing students, along with parents and friends produced a very friendly and relaxing atmosphere in which to enjoy the broad range of challenging questions set by Dr Kowalewski. It is important that the schools can engage with as many parents as possible and raise their awareness to the work of the Association, both to seek support for events throughout the year but also to ensure that they have an active ‘voice’ in the life of the communities.
