Salters Science Festival – Southampton University

Salters Science festival

On the 26th of March 2010, Emily Bulkeley, Joshua Mullane, Mackenzie Roberts and I (Joseph Chaplin) travelled to the University of Southampton to participate in the Salter’s Festival of Chemistry. This involved teams representing their school to compete against other schools to win prizes at the end. There was also a great deal of learning and understanding about Chemistry as the day went on. The day started off with an introduction followed by a challenge in which your team did two experiments, to try and work out ‘who dunnit it’. After that we had a lunch break followed by a second challenge, this involved ‘Chemical Magic’ in which you had to discover different solutions using the equipment provided. As the final task concluded we gathered up our lab coats and headed towards the lecture room, where a lecture with a difference was given. This lecture also accompanied the Prize giving, although we did not win a prize we all did receive certificates for taking part.

All in all we had a fantastic day at the University and I hope we will return again.

Parents and staff enjoyed a fantastic display of musical talent last Thursday evening. Students from the College performed an ecletic mix of music in the setting of  ‘The Church of the Immaculate Conception’, Portswood. Monies collected on the evening would be split equally between the two causes. A big thank-you to all those involved and who contributed their time, resources and money. A special thank-you  goes to Brother James for organising the event.

Visit from the Household Cavalry Regiments

RAC_HCR_02

The College were pleased to welcome members of the Household Cavalry on Thursday afternoon. Three members of the Regiments representing the two divisions, The Blues and Royals and the Life guards gave a one hour presentation to Year 7 and 8.

They described the operational role the regiments have  in armoured fighting vehicles which has seen them at the forefront of Britain’s military operations including the Falklands (1982), the Gulf (1990), Bosnia, Kosovo and most recently in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Regiments are Guards Regiments and, with the five Foot Guards Regiments, form the Household Division.

The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment has the unique privilege to meet the requirement to carry out mounted and some dismounted ceremonial duties on State and Royal occasions which include the provision of a Sovereign’s Escort most commonly seen at The Queen’s Birthday Parade in June each year. Other occasions include Sovereign’s Escorts for Her Majesty The Queen during State Visits by visiting Heads of State, and as required by Her Majesty anywhere in the Kingdom.

Students were fully engaged with the presentation and asked many questions about the role of the regiments.
